"Self- reliance in any measure is the only road for a dignified life. Therefore, empowerment through training is our guiding philosophy"

The key issue with intellectually challenged persons is the difficulties in learning which has a cumulative effect in other areas of functioning as well. Appropriate training at every stage of their development is the answer to multiple problems faced by them and their parents. Past two decades of working with intellectually challenged boys and girls at Muskaan Vocational Training & Work Center has left no doubts in our mind that properly motivated and trained they learn and achieve much more than what is generally thought. Their keenness, enthusiasm and perseverance for learning and working and zest for life have been a source of inspiration to all of us.

HOW THE TRAINING IS GIVEN

Training is provided at different levels. The levels are envisioned as a progression, moving from one level to another as they achieve required skills. These levels are represented below in a flow chart:

THE SPECIAL UNIT

A particular mention has to be made of the Muskaan training program for individuals who are severely challenged. This unit is called the Special unit as it currently caters to 5 trainees all of whom require individually specific inputs in a one-to-one teaching format. The objective of the unit is to develop learning potential, self-help skills and an awareness of surroundings through a multi sensory medium of instruction

Life skills program

Life skills mean the skills needed to fulfill the requirement of everyday life. If training in personal care makes one self reliant, building awareness of self and others as well as surroundings helps in self-direction and making appropriate choices. Similarly socio-emotional competence helps one in handling one’s emotions, learning social skills and become an acceptable member of the community. Cognitive enrichment or strengthening of cognitive functions makes one a better learner and helps in improving one’s thinking and reasoning capacities.

Similarly Art Centre (creative and performing arts) provide expression to one’s creativity and emotional healing.

Physical fitness & sports

Muskaan runs a comprehensive sports program in collaboration with the Special Olympics Bharat. The Special Olympics provides technical guidance and organizes events at zonal, state & national levels. Coaching is given in various sports like bocce, badminton, cricket, athletics, skating, power lifting, basket ball, cycling etc. Each trainee & worker is being trained in at least two sports.

ComputerTraining Programme

Computer training program. Computer is an interesting medium of learning as well as it provides opportunity to develop an interesting and meaningful leisure activity. Many students learn word processing, data base programs, MS paints and clip-art programs along with computer games.

Art Centre

Through establishing such a center, Muskaan hopes to make cultural activities a part of the curriculum so that the trainees can get exposed to various performing and creative arts on a regular basis.

There are two kinds of arts: performing arts & creative arts. Art centre is a place where all the students have an opportunity to explore both. At Muskaan we have found art to be a good medium of achieving our goal of ‘holistic development’ for each of our trainees.

Art is believed to be therapeutic as it helps individuals

  • to cope with stress
  • express locked away feelings, emotions & experiences
  • improve self image
  • enhance self awareness
  • increase cognitive abilities
  • develop empathy & sensitivity to others

Activities at the Art center include:

  • Drawing  and Painting,
  • Dance and Movement,
  • Music,
  • Mimicry
  • theatre
  • Story telling
  • Craft.
  • pottery
